19. Access and Security Logo

Logins and Passwords Top

CROME Systems can optionally be configured to require a user to login (with name and password) before the product can be used.  Additionally, different users can be granted access to administrator tasks, which include using the CROME client to manage reports, formulas, and groups on the CROME Server (not just on the local PC).

The CROME Server can be configured, by the system administrator, in one of three Security Modes:

Security Mode 1: No user accounts.  No user name and passwords are required to use the product, and there is no CROME GUI access to System Reports, Formulas, or Groups (instead, those files must be managed manually, via Unix commands, by the system administrator).

Security Mode 2: User login required.  In this mode, every user must enter a name and password to use the CROME Client code and any CROME Services provide on the CROME webpages.   Some users can be granted administrative privileges to modify System Reports, Formulas, and Groups.

Security Mode 3: User login optional.  In this mode, no user name/password is required to use CROME features.  However, you can optionally login using a name and password, and if that user account has been granted administrator privileges, you can modify System Reports, Formulas, and Groups.

In all cases, the Security Mode, the User Accounts and Passwords, and the granting of privileges are all managed by the CROME administrator.

Login Popup when Starting CROME Top

If the system has been configured in Security Mode 2 (User login required) as defined above, then every time you launch CROME from your PC you will be prompted enter a user name and password:

You must type in a valid user name and password to continue using the application.  Names and passwords are assigned by your company’s CROME administrator.  Note that if you check “Remember my password” then the values will be filled in for you next time you launch the application.

File / Access Menu Top

If the system has been configured in either Security Mode 2 (User Login Required) or Security Mode 3 (User Login Optional) as defined above, then CROME screens will display an Access choice in the File Menu to allow the user to login.  This Access menu appears on the File Menu on the CROME Main Screen as well as the Report Editor, the Formula Editor, and the Group Editor.

If user logins are optional (Security Mode 3), and you are currently not “logged in”, then the Access Menu will provide you with the choice to Login:

After choosing Login, you will be prompted with the standard Login popup box.  If you login as a user that has administrator privileges, you will then be able to modify System Report, Formulas, Groups, etc.

If your CROME system has been configured for “Login Optional”, you can also choose to logout:

and thus disable any administrator privileges your login may have had.  You can also Change Login to a different name.

If your system requires logins for use of the product (Security Mode 2), then you must be logged in already after the starting the application.  Therefore, the File / Access Menu does not provide the option to Login or Logout, only the “Change Login” to a different name if desired:

Administrator Privileges – Saving to Server Top

Your company’s CROME administrator can add and delete user accounts and assign privileges.  These privileges include the ability to save, more/rename, and delete System Reports, System Formulas, and System Groups.  This feature is powerful and dangerous, and no one but the system administrator should have these privileges, because changes affect all CROME users.  The administrator can also assign, on a user-by-user basis, which system folders and subfolders can be written to by authorized users.

If your login name has privilege to write to the server, then the only changes you will see occur when you choose Save, Save As, or Delete from the Report Editor, Formula Editor, or Group Editor.  In these cases, the popup dialog boxes will include System Folders and well as Local Folders, and files can be placed in those areas, removed, renamed, etc., if the user is authorized.
